How we test saunas

Rankings on this site are based on a consistent set of criteria, hands-on use where possible, manufacturer specifications, and aggregated owner feedback. We apply the same yardstick to every sauna so that our picks are comparable, repeatable, and honest about their limits. Here is exactly how we work.

What we score

Every sauna is judged on six criteria. No single number decides a ranking — a sauna that's brilliant on heat but flimsy on build won't beat an all-rounder.

Our testing process

When we assess a sauna, we work through the same steps:

  1. Specification review — we record the heat type, dimensions, materials, power requirements, warranty, and any published EMF or safety testing.
  2. Hands-on sessions, where available — we note heat-up time, how the heat feels and distributes, build solidity, assembly, controls, and the day-to-day experience over repeated use.
  3. Owner-feedback analysis — we read widely across verified buyers to surface the issues that only appear after months of ownership: durability, customer service, delivery damage, and reliability.
  4. Comparison & ranking — we place each sauna against its direct peers on the six criteria above and assign it a role (best overall, best value, best for a use case) rather than a false-precision score.

Hands-on vs researched

Where we have personally used a unit, we label it as tested. Where we have not, we combine manufacturer specifications with aggregated owner feedback and say so clearly. We never imply first-hand experience we don't have — being straight about the basis for a verdict matters more to us than appearing to have touched everything.

How we handle health claims

Saunas sit close to health, and that's exactly where a lot of marketing overreaches. We keep our claims careful: we separate what research suggests from what is proven, we avoid invented statistics and citations, and we treat much of the evidence as showing association rather than cause. Our content is informational and is not medical advice — if you have a medical condition or are pregnant, check with your doctor before using a sauna.

Why you can trust the rankings

We earn affiliate commissions, but the order of our picks is decided on the merits before any commercial consideration. A higher commission never buys a higher ranking, and we'll happily rank a product we earn nothing from above one we do. See our affiliate disclosure for the full detail.

What we don't do

Pricing

We show relative price tiers ($ to $$$$) rather than exact prices, because sauna prices change often and brands run frequent sales. For a fuller picture of purchase, installation, and running costs, see our sauna cost guide — and always check the live price before buying.

Keeping guides current

The market moves: models get revised, discontinued, or replaced. We revisit our guides as that happens and show an "updated" date so you can see how fresh a recommendation is. If you spot something out of date or wrong, please tell us — reader corrections make the site better.
